North Dome

United States | Yosemite | Yosemite Rock Climbing

North Dome, similar to Snake Dike on Half Dome, is a moderate adventure climb with a significant approach. The setting defines idyllic. The views are topnotch. The climbing is as good as you can imagine: perfectly smooth, well-protected slab on Crest Jewel and beautiful cracks on the South Face. Most parties opt for Crest Jewel to avoid carrying all the rack that the South Face requires. Both routes are must-do classics for their grade. For most parties, simul-climbing Royal Arches (5.7 A0, but mostly 5.5) is faster than doing the brutal hike up the North Dome gully. Either way, North Dome is a long climb with a very long descent. Plan accordingly and bring plenty of water (there is a seasonal spring at the top of Royal Arches), food, headlamps, and clothes – North Dome tops out over 7,500 feet.
